Arthur Birt Walker was born on 7th February 1894 in Wolstanton to William and Sarah Ann Walker. William was born in Hanley and Sarah in Stoke and they had eight children, one of which did not survive childhood. Arthur was christened in Wolstanton on 1st April 1894.

In 1901 the family were living at 13 Chelmsford Road, Wolstanton and William was employed as a Coal Miner. By 1908 when Arthur joined the Scouts, the family had moved to 34 Dimsdale Parade, Porthill. According to ‘Boy Scouts Organisation Register for The Potteries and District Boy Scouts Association’ Arthur was 15 years old, but he was actually 14! According to  the 1911 Census, the family were still living at Dimsdale Parade and both William and Arthur are coal miners.

Unfortunately, we know no more about Arthur’s life other than he died aged 68 years old sometime after his birthday and the end of March 1962. He still lived in the Newcastle area at this time.
