George Walter Levi Hawkins was born in Wolstanton in early 1892 to George Walter Levi and Elizabeth Hawkins. Both Walter Snr. and Elizabeth were born in Wolstanton and they had eleven children, 4 of which died in childhood. George Jnr. was christened on 24th February 1892 in Wolstanton, presumably at St. Margaret’s Church.
In 1901, according to the Census, the family were living at 3 New Street Wolstanton and George Snr was employed as an Earthenware Decorator. By 1908 the family had moved to 41 Watlands View in Porthill. George Jnr. is mentioned in the December 1908 newspaper article about the football match the Scouts played against May Bank Lads. He scored a hat trick!
In 1911, the family are still at the same address and the Census has George Snr. as being employed as a Pottery Guilder and Painter and George Jnr. as a Labourman at Renick(?) Yard.
We know nothing more about George’s life after 1911, other than he married Lily Hughes in 1938 and he died between January and March 1965 and he was still living in the Newcastle area.
