Charles Edward Gibbs

Name: Gibbs C Address: 38 Sparrow Terrace Patrol: Bull (L) Age: 16

Charles Edward Gibbs was born in Burslem between January and March 1891 to William and Anne Gibbs. William and Anne were both born in Birmingham, Warwickshire (as it was then) and had ten children, two of whom didn’t live past childhood.

The family lived at 38 Sparrow Terrace and in 1901 and 1911 William was listed as a Brass Polisher. Charles was actually 17 when he joined the Scouts in 1908. He is also recorded as having scored a goal in the football match on Saturday, 12th December 1908 against May Bank Boys! In 1911 he is listed as working as a Die Fitter.

Sadly, Charles died aged 22 on the 28th December 1913. He died of ‘Phthisis Pulmonalis’ (tuberculosis) which it appears he had been suffering from for nine months.
